Dear Ms Soloff

Thank you for your application dated 31 August 2005 to continue to conduct research in Catholic systemic schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney.

Permission is given for you to approach the Principals of the schools you choose to nominate, requesting participants for your study:

"Growing up in Australia (Waves 2 to 4) ".

Continuing approval for this research project is conditional upon providing a list of schools who agree to participate. This would be at least annually or as changes to participation occur.

It is the prerogative of any Principal whom you might approach to decline your invitation to be involved in this study or to withdraw from involvement at any time.

The privacy of the school and that of any school personnel or students involved in your study must, of course, be preserved at all times and comply with requirements under the Commonwealth Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.

When you have established your participating schools, please complete the attached form and return it to this office. At this office, it is a condition of approval that when your research has been completed you will forward a summary report of the findings and/or recommendations as soon as practicable after results are to hand.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or Miss Evette Ashton if there is any further information you require. I wish you well in this undertaking, CEO Sydney would be particulary interested in the outcome of this research and look forward to learning about your findings.

Yours sincerely,
Christopher Barrett

Dear Mr Barrett,

Thank you for your email and approval for Growing Up in Australia to continue our research, which is funded by the Federal Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

Growing Up in Australia would like to send a paper questionnaire to the teachers of the study children and therefore we don't have any direct contact with the children or the schools involved in the study across Australia.

Is it still necessary for us to complete the Compliance letter?

Regards,
Elaine

Dear Ms Kong
Thank you for your inquiry
It is noted that this application was approved in 2005. Since that time there have been changes to the NSW Child Protection Legislation with which the Catholic Education Office Sydney is obliged to comply. CEO Sydney is pleased to grant a continuation of the approval for this study, conditional upon receipt by email at this office, prior to commencement of the next phase, of the 'Compliance Letter from the Employer', which advises that all researchers have been screened in compliance with Child Protection legislation requirements.
A sample of this letter is to be found in the Application to Conduct Research package found on the Catholic Education Office Sydney website at www.ceosyd.catholic.edu.au
